Kitchener was called Berlin when it first started making the clothes that would need washing. The city's garment factories turned out dress shirts and collars by the thousands, and by 1917 there were seven shirt and collar makers, three glove manufacturers, and nine button factories in town. David Knipfel opened Pearl Laundry in 1897 to keep up with the demand, eventually settling into an Art Deco building on Queen Street South that still stands. The garment factories are gone, but the old Lang Tannery is a tech hub now, and laundry pickup and delivery has replaced the walk to the laundromat.
